Welcome back to term 4

Kia ora, 

Wow into our new term - PLEASE check your child's school bag as there is a welcome to term 4 notice that will be in there. 

Home learning - basic facts, spelling and reading. Please read with your child, to your child or listen to your child read. 



One date that is on Tuesday is our annual health curriculum information evening.
I hope you all received the health letter via email. If not please contact one of the teachers and we will get a paper copy to you. Information can be found here: http://health.tki.org.nz/Teaching-in-HPE/Policy-guidelines/Sexuality.

Here’s to a great last term of 2018 - how fast has this year gone?
Here’s to a great term from us teachers: Gaylene Hansen (R6), Rachel Burt (R7), Sue Lyford (R8) and Andrew Wattie for the 1st week back (R9) - and Mr Nick Adcock will be back teaching in R9 for the rest of term 4.
We are always thinking of Rhonda as she is continuing her getting well journey.
For this term Rachel will be filling in as Kawaka Syndicate leader, supported by our wonderful team.

  • Uniform: School sun hat and please ensure all your child’s uniform items are named.
  • Home learning: Goes home on a Monday and in on the Friday. Consists of: Reading, basic facts and spelling.

  • Week 1:
  • We would like to invite all our parents and whānau from across the school to our annual health curriculum information evening. This will be held in the school library from 5.30-6.30pm on Tuesday 16th October.  
  • Friday 19th October - Our Greytown School Pet Day ( postponement will be the first fine day)
  • (Please note that school finishes at 12.30pm for your child/ren).
  • Week 2: Monday 22nd October - Labour Day
  • Week 4: Tuesday 6th November - School athletics day (postponement date is: Wednesday 7th November)
  • Week 6: Wednesday 21st November - Interschool athletics
  • Week 7: Pukaha Mt Bruce trip - information will be sent home with the dates and cost of this. (The approximate cost will be around $20).  
  • Week 9: Day to be confirmed: Kawaka Christmas sing-a-long and picnic lunch.
  • Week 9: Friday 14th December - last day of term 4.




Term 4 Learning:
We have some very exciting learning coming up in term 4:
We will be doing ‘Ultimate Waste’ lessons which is part of the ‘Zero Waste Education programme’ run by Jo Dean (Zero Waste Educator).

Our Inquiry Ka Puawai is health based and covers:

  • How to show respect
  • Self in relation to others – similarities and difference
  • Self in relation to gender
  • Identifying own strengths
  • Making friends
  • Identifying and managing feelings
  • Body parts
  • Growth
  • Caring for the body
Maths we will be completing our multiplication/division unit, with fractions and probability to follow. Ending the year with Nrich and math word problems.
Day to day maths basic facts and hot spots.

Literacy we are going to be using a reading/writing contract in class where the children will be covering a variety of tasks in both areas.
Our library time we are going to focus on finding examples of expert writing to share with each other to encourage what the children are learning in class.

Arts: Mrs Kirkland will be taking her visual art lessons. We will be doing syndicate singing every week, leading up to a fun Christmas sing along nearer the end of term. We will continue using GoNoodle for daily fitness and dance.

PE: Athletics skills training leading to our school athletics day in week 4 and interschool athletics after that. We will then be doing Summer sports, playground games and continuing daily fitness.

EOTC: Before and after our trip to Pukaha Mt Bruce we will be doing learning around  native birds and eel. https://www.doc.govt.nz/get-involved/conservation-education/resources/

Circle time and SHARP lessons: We will be continuing both of these.

We incorporate all subjects into all areas of our daily learning - to encourage real life learning.
